Bobby Selvaggio Biography
Since growing up in the Cleveland area, Bobby Selvaggio has established himself as one of the top jazz musicians in the area. Bobby has , in the summer of 2006, created a jazz studies program called the Aurora Center for Jazz Studies, which he is the director of. This program allows Bobby to share his knowledge of the saxophone and jazz music, teaching classes in improvisation, composition, jazz history, and jazz ensembles. He also maintains a saxophone studio at the Aurora School of Music.
Bobby has also shown his dedication in teaching young jazz musicians by giving clinics and master classes at Colleges and High Schools throughout Northeast Ohio, the West Coast at San Jose State University, and Canada at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia.
After receiving a Bachelor of Music in Music Performance from Kent State University, Bobby went to New York City and earned a masters degree in Jazz Performance on a full scholarship from Manhattan School of Music. While in NYC he studied with such jazz greats as Joe Lovano, Bobby Watson, Dick Oatts, and Maria Schneider. He has performed with the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Joe Lovano Nonet, Kenny Werner, Ryan Kisor, Dan Wall, Jamey Haddad, and Aretha Franklin as well as many other artists.
Since moving back to Cleveland with his wife Chelsea and son Julian, Bobby has recorded four cd's with notables Dan Wall on Piano and Chris Howes on violin. His most recent CD, Modern Times released on Arabesque Records, features Kenny Werner on piano and Sean Jones on Trumpet. He has toured throughout the USA and Canada with his group the Bobby Selvaggio Quartet. Bobby is also a published writer in The Saxophone Journal with an article on jazz improvisation. EDUCATION
Arabesque Recording Artist Bobby Selvaggio's resume as a performer / composer is quite extensive, having recorded and performed with International Jazz artists Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, Sean Jones, Jamey Haddad, Dan Wall, Christian Howes, Ryan Kisor, Matt Wilson, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, as well as many others. As said by Kenny Werner about Bobby and his latest CD, Modern Times: "Bobby's CD was really something special. It's not often that a composer sets up tunes and situations that make the band and every soloist sound special, but once we understood Bobby’s compositions, each and every one of them started to make us sound brilliant. Also, for my money, Bobby is among the best of players out there!". As an educator / Selmer Saxophone Artist, Bobby has given Master Classes, been a Guest Artist, and composed commissioned pieces for High Schools and Colleges on the East Coast, Midwest, West Coast, and Canada at such places as San Jose State University, Chabot College, St. Francis Xavier University, the University of Akron, and Solon High School, among others. Bobby is available to come to your school and give a Master Class on improvisation or composition, coach Jazz combos, perform with student and faculty ensembles, and give private lessons. He has an extensive repertoire of original compositions and arrangements for Big Band, 11 piece and 8 piece ensembles, and combos from beginner to advanced and is available to compose a commissioned piece for your school. Bobby 's various groups ( Bobby Selvaggio 4tet / 5tet, Grass Roots Movement, and the Hendectet Jazz Collective ) are available for Performance at your school. He has toured extensively Nationally and Internationally promoting all his various projects.
Modern Times, Bobby's most recent CD on Arabesque Records and featuring Kenny Werner on piano and Sean Jones on trumpet, has remained on the National Jazz Charts for over 6 months, is receiving critical acclaim from major Jazz critics / magazines such as Downbeat, and has made it to the 2nd Round of the Grammy Nominations for "Best Instrumental Jazz Album" and "Best Improvised Jazz Solo". Also available is Bobby's new book on Jazz Improvisation, the Art of Spontaneous Improvisation, volume 1 - Beginnings.
